db-orders-01

VM running, copying

00:00

Downtime

00:00

Model time, to scale

A warm migration of a 200 GiB database VM, simulated with the planning model of the design document (SDD §9.1): 120 GiB used, 2 MiB/s of guest writes, a 1 Gbit/s link. The clock is compressed; the numbers are not.
  • Used chunk
  • Written since the last pass
  • In flight
  • Sent during downtime
  • On RHOSO

Three pre-copy passes move 120 GiB, 2.0 GiB and 879 MiB while the VM keeps running, for 31m 32s. After an approval inside the change window, the cutover stops the VM, sends the last 879 MiB and boots it on RHOSO 18.0. Verification passes after 11m 20s of downtime; a cold copy of the same VM would be down for 20m 53s.

Every common guest OS

OpenStack sources move KVM guests to KVM, so whatever boots on the source boots on RHOSO. From VMware, virt-v2v on the RHEL 9 conversion host decides. Legacy releases get a warning with the fix, never a silent block.

02 / LESS GUESSWORK. MORE CERTAINTY.

Know your window. Own your move.

Seamless estimates every strategy for every VM, picks the one with the least downtime and refines the number after the first delta pass. Try the planning model with your own VM.

Before the window: 3 passes in 31m 32s while the VM keeps running, then a final delta of 879 MiB.

Warm downtime is the fixed overhead plus one scan of the disks. A faster link doesn't shorten it; a faster scan or more disks in parallel does.

Planning model with the default parameters: 500 MiB/s scan per disk stream, 4 disks in parallel, a 1 GiB convergence threshold and at most 5 passes. In a real plan, the first delta pass replaces the write and scan rates with measured ones. Read the performance model (opens in a new tab)

03 / FROM CONNECTION TO CONFIDENCE

One journey. Every step in your hands.

One workflow for every source. Each migration walks an explicit state machine, survives a control-plane restart from its checkpoint, and leaves an audit trail for every action.

  1. 01

    Connect both clouds

Add RHOSP 17.1, community OpenStack, Kolla-Ansible or vCenter as a source and RHOSO 18.0 as the destination, with a preset for each platform. Plan waves, pilot first

Discover the inventory with disks, NICs, guest OS and readiness flags. Select VMs, map networks, flavors, volume types and projects, and let the planner order waves by risk with a small pilot first. A wave starts only when the one before it is complete.

    Validate before anything moves

Pre-flight checks report blockers, warnings and info with the fix for each. Every VM gets an estimate for each eligible strategy and an automatic choice you can override.

  4. 04

Copy while the VMs keep running

Warm VMs are copied in snapshot passes while they serve traffic. After the first pass only the chunks whose BLAKE2b digest changed cross the wire, and every pass ends with a verified manifest digest. A converged VM waits in awaiting_cutover, kept fresh by keep-warm syncs.

    • Pass 3, delta

      879 MiB

Under the 1 GiB threshold: converged, waiting for the window

  5. 05

    Cut over inside the window

A cutover starts only with an approval from a second approver, inside the change window and with a free cutover slot. The VM stops, the final delta syncs and it boots on RHOSO. The downtime clock runs from the stop to the verified boot.

    • web-frontend-0701:05

The next VM waits for a free slot and keeps syncing meanwhile.

  6. 06

    Verify, then finalize

Seamless checks that the server is ACTIVE, its ports, TCP probes and console patterns. A failed check rolls back on its own: the RHOSO instance is removed, its volumes kept, and the source VM starts again. Finalize, the one step that can't be undone, needs an approver and the VM's name typed in full.

    Failed, rolled back

    • Port 22 closed after boot
    • RHOSO instance removed, volumes kept
    • Source VM running again

04 / CONFIDENCE IS BUILT IN

Reversible until you say it's final

Approvals, windows and rollbacks are rules in the control plane, not conventions in a runbook. The source VM stays where it is until an approver finalizes.

Gates the control plane enforces
A cutover starts only when its approval, its change window and a free cutover slot all hold.
Maker and checker
Whoever requests or forces a cutover can't approve it. A second approver must.
Rollback until finalize
A rollback removes the RHOSO instance, keeps its volumes and starts the source VM again. A failed verification runs it on its own.
Typed confirmation for the irreversible step
Nothing deletes source data before finalize, and finalize needs an approver and the VM's name typed in full.
Resumes after a restart
In-flight migrations continue from their checkpoint when the control plane comes back.
No stranded source
Every step has a wall-clock ceiling, so a hung playbook never keeps a stopped VM down.
Every action on the record
Every mutating call is audited. Export the trail, or prune it on your retention schedule.

05 / INTELLIGENCE WITH BOUNDARIES

Assisted, never autonomous

An optional advisor gives typed, calibrated judgments where rules alone can't decide, and a team memory recalls how similar failures were fixed. Turn both off and every migration still runs.

Bounded by the planner

  • Weighs in only on a tie between eligible strategies, or when none meets the downtime SLO.
  • Never makes an ineligible strategy eligible, never skips an approval, never starts a rollback or a finalize.
  • Below 0.6 confidence, the rule-based choice stands.
  • Payloads are redacted before they leave, and guest console output is screened as untrusted.
  • Every recommendation is kept with its evidence, confidence and model, to approve or override.
